Flower Focus | Hyacinth

Hyacinth

The hyacinth would have to be one of the most unique and beautiful of the spring bulb family.

Since Hyacinths are grown from bulbs, this means that each year when they have finished flowering, the bulbs are removed from the soil, dried out and re-used to bloom again next season.

Hyacinths are slightly different and more versatile than their other bulb family members, however, in that they can be grown out of soil. A popular option is to grow the Hyacinth bulb indoors in a vase of water. A window sill is ideal, and the bulb will grow and flower happily over the course of 6-8 weeks.

Hyacinths are gown in abundance in Europe and the United Kingdom, however, they are widely available throughout the world.

Grape Hyacinth by Vera Kratochvil

A popular and slightly unusual variety of the Hyacinth is the Grape Hyacinth, which are not actually hyacinths at all, but members of the Lily family. Their appearance alone has given them admission to the Hyacinth family by default, and they are a unique addition to any spring bouquet.

Their wide variety of colours and long vase life makes them an ideal cut flower. Hyacinths are most abundantly available in pastel shades such as white, pink and yellow and are also available in rich hot pinks and purples. Hyacinths have a very sweet and delicate fragrance, which makes them an ideal companion to a mixed bunch of Spring flowers.

In Australia, Hyacinths are usually available from mid-February until early October. The southern states offer the perfect conditions for growing this flower during the cooler months and distribute them throughout the rest of the country.

In the vase Hyacinths are a long lasting flower, however, as the small florets open up, the flower heads can get quite heavy, causing the stem to bend. This is why hyacinths are best kept together in a short vase for support, or mixed with other spring flowers. For optimum longevity, keep water clean and fresh at all times and cut the stems on an angle every 2-3 days to give the flowers a fresh drink.

As wedding flowers, Hyacinths are a beautiful option. They work best as an accompaniment to a mixed country-style Posy Bouquet, or en masse, on their own in a bouquet with minimum foliage. The Florets can also be used on their own and wired separately to create delicate buttonholes or corsages.
